Three Epic Treks You Can Do Close to Home

When you think of taking on an epic trek adventure the mind tends to travel to far-flung places. The breath-taking glory of the Everest Base Camp. Machu Picchu, where wildness and artifice meet. Or the splendour of Mount Kilimanjaro’s stratovolcano. And it’s easy to forget the challenges that lie closer to home. Sometimes, you don’t need to travel half a world away to test yourself and do something incredible. Sometimes, the best challenges are right in front of you.

Our Three Favourite UK Trekking Challenges

The Three Peaks

Britain’s mountains might not be quite so iconic or tall as the world’s greatest peaks. But they are equally special. Each in their own way. And when taken together, they present the tremendously physical Three Peaks challenge. Taking in Scotland’s Ben Nevis, England’s Scafell Pike, and Wales’ Snowdon, this three-day trekking extravaganza will have your leg muscles quaking, your feet begging for a rest, and your breath truly taken away by the majesty of the Great British countryside.

Hadrian’s Wall

Stretching from coast to coast, like a girdle across England’s middle, Hadrian’s Wall is one of the UK’s greatest Roman artifacts. It’s also 84 miles of fantastic trekking experience. Taking in a variety of landscapes, the five-day trek will take you from Bowness-on-Solway to Segedunum in Newcastle. Visiting the Temple of Mithras, the Birdoswald ruins, and Portgate along the way. There’s no better way to take in a breath of history while finding out just exactly what your body can do. There are no major inclines on this trek (the steepest incline will be on day three, heading east of Birdoswald), no climbing gear required. But that does not make it any less challenging. And you’ll be hard pressed to find a more satisfying achievement!

Lake District 10 Peaks

Three peaks not good enough for you? How about we go a few more in Cumbria’s magnificent Lake District? Although the name is impressive – and it’s actually a really impressive feat to complete – the 10 Peaks Challenge is less demanding than our other treks. It takes approximately 14 hours, from dawn to dusk. And covers around 17 miles. From Langdale Valley to Buttermere. And the scenery is stupendous. We conduct treks right across the globe, and there is nowhere that surpasses the Lake District in its majesty. And the trek is no stroll in the park. Comprising 2,250 metres of ascent, this is a trek that will give anyone’s thighs a run for their money! And it’s a great way to raise money for charity too.

Trekking needn’t be a massive, expensive, time-consuming commitment. Adventures can be had anywhere. And if you’re reluctant to travel as the Covid-19 pandemic rumbles on, then a UK trek can provide the perfect alternative challenge.
