How to Prepare for Your Trek to Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic travel destinations the world has to offer. Known for its astounding beauty, great historical interest, and amazing flora and fauna, it is a destination with something for almost everyone. And for hikers, you can add to all that with the lure of a physical challenge. It has highs, it has lows. It has bridges, a cloud forest, and steep mountain passes. And if you’re lucky, it has llamas! But while it has everything you might wish for from a hike, and it’s far from being our most difficult challenge experience, it’s no walk in the park. And the trek will be so much more enjoyable if you’re ready for it.

So, what do you need to do when you’re planning a Machu Picchu hiking challenge?

How Should You Prepare for Your Trek to Machu Picchu?

Physical training

Some Machu Picchu treks are harder than others. And some routes are longer. The Choose a Challenge itinerary, which follows the Salkantay route to the Lost City, isn’t the most difficult path available. And it can be completed without need of climbing experience or equipment. But it still requires more than a little endurance and physical fitness. So, if you’re planning to join one of our treks, it makes really good sense to prepare yourself physically.

· Cardio training is a good idea before any kind of trek. Especially when you’re going to be walking at altitude. It’s important because the better your cardiovascular system works, the better it is at processing oxygen. While altitude sickness is extremely rare on Machu Picchu, a healthy cardiovascular system will further reduce the risk, while making the trek more comfortable and enjoyable for you.

· Leg training is also a sensible precaution before a Machu Picchu trek. Primarily because your step count is going to be off the scale. By increasing your leg fitness, you will reduce the potential for leg strain and cramp. And you’ll be physically stronger, so the journey will be easier.

· Hiking training makes sense before any hike. Not only because it physically and mentally prepares you for what lies in store. But because it gives you the chance to break in your equipment. Your walking boots and backpack in particular. And it helps you to work out exactly what you can and can’t do without when on a long trek.

· Upper body training can also be beneficial for anyone considering a Machu Picchu challenge. Exercises like sit-ups and shoulder presses can help to protect your back against strain when carrying a backpack for long distances.

Mental preparation

Trekking Machu Picchu is incredibly exciting. It is full of wonder. And it finishes with an enormous sense of achievement. As well as an enormous view. But it does involve six days of hiking. With some pretty tough ascents. And that can be hard on both your body and mind. So, you need to be prepared for some potentially tough times ahead. For most people, the sheer glory of the scenery is enough to pull them through any physical discomfort. But you can never tell if you’re going to be adversely affected. So, get yourself ready on the off-chance.

The Machu Picchu challenge is one of our most popular. Partly, because with a bit of training, it’s open to almost anyone. But mainly because it is such a breathtakingly awesome destination. Once you’ve seen Machu Picchu, you will never forget it. And we can honestly say that you will never regret it.
