How to Prepare for Trekking in the High Atlas Mountains

Morocco is a destination that has a lot to offer to the adventurous traveller. There’s the vibrancy of Marrakesh. The barren splendour of the Sahara. The history and golden architecture of Ait Ben Haddou’s fortified village. And, of course, the High Atlas Mountains. One of the leading destinations of enthusiastic trekkers, the High Atlas Mountains offer breath-taking scenery, and sweeping peaks pocked with isolated villages. They’re as beautiful as they are unique. And trekking them is an experience that will live with you forever.

High Atlas Trek

But if you are planning to embark upon a High Atlas Mountains trekking experience, what do you need to do to prepare?

A Guide to Trekking in the High Atlas Mountains

How long does the High Atlas Mountain trek take?

Covering a distance of many miles, the High Atlas Mountain trek takes six days of comfortable hiking. With two additional days required for travel. You can also add any extra time you may fancy for local exploration, or an ‘edge of the Sahara’ extension trip.

What will the weather be like?

We operate most of our High Atlas Mountains treks in June and September. In June, the average temperature is about 33°C, although it can get a lot hotter. In September, temperatures range from a pleasant 25°C to around 32°C. But as with any climb, the temperature can quickly fluctuate. The night-time average is 18°C. Rainfall is relatively low in both months, averaging about 3mm and two to three days.

What should I pack?

Whether hotel-based or camping, your accommodation is provided throughout your Choose a Challenge trek. So, your main priorities should be your personal travel essentials.

· A strong, comfortable backpack – preferably one that you’re used to wearing.

· Clothing – Lightweight layers are always a sensible move when hiking. Most people bring shorts, trousers, vests, lightweight long-sleeved tops, underwear, socks, a sun hat, a light waterproof mac, and a fleece.

· Strong, worn-in walking boots with good ankle support.

· Sunscreen and lip protection.

· High-UV sunglasses.

· A water bottle with either filter or water purifying tablets.

· Paracetamol and basic first aid items, such as blister plasters.

· Toiletries, including hand sanitiser and insect repellent.

· Small camera and USB/power bank for your phone.

Do I need to bring my own food?

Throughout the trek, breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided by Choose a Challenge. We will so provide dinner on your first night in Morocco, and breakfast on your day of departure. If you’re someone who likes to much as they walk, pop a packet of mints or a bag of Trail Mix in your luggage!

How to physically prepare for a High Atlas Mountains trek?

The best way to prepare for your trek to the High Atlas Mountains is to improve your stamina through regular walking. Although there are some relatively steep ascents, eventually taking you a height of 4,167m above sea level, the climb is largely incremental. No climbing experience is required. And you will not need to use any specialist equipment. But you will need to do lots of walking! So, before your trip, focus on endurance and cardio fitness. It’s a great way to break in your hiking boots too!

Some people do struggle at altitude. So, if you are able to fit in some altitude training before your trek, it may be beneficial.

Trekking the High Atlas Mountains is one of those incredible once-in-a-lifetime experiences. It will challenge you physically. But it will also wow you with its beauty. And expose you to cultures and experiences like no other. So, are you ready to start planning your next adventure?
