6 Reasons Why... The Machu Picchu Trek Should be on Every Bucket List

The trek to Machu Picchu takes you on one of the most spectacular routes in the world and should be on every travellers bucket list. If you are considering taking on this epic challenge then DO IT! It will be one of the most extraordinary experiences of your life and nothing beats that feeling of reaching the fabled ruins of Machu Picchu, nestled amongst lush forest, emerging from the mysterious mist that surrounds its peaks. Still need some convincing? Take a look at our reasons why this is the must-do challenge…

1) The spectacular scenery & unique route

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again, this will be one of the most breathtaking trekking routes you ever tackle, with diverse scenery, amazing wildlife and the iconic finish line of the Lost City.

You will avoid the classic tourist trail on the Salkantay route, getting off the beaten track and discovering the magic of Soraypampa and the hidden beauty of Laguna Humantay - a spectacular lake with clear, turquoise waters and the backdrop of the Humantay Glacier. You will take in coffee plantations and fruit trees, trek through lush jungle, explore Aguas Calientes and, of course, uncover the wonders of the iconic Machu Picchu.

2) The warm and friendly locals…

Who live a peaceful and traditional way of life, which may come as a stark contrast to the culture you’re used to. Dressed in traditional, colourful Peruvian clothing, you will see them weaving and knitting or farming and cooking on open fires - they are extremely proud of their culture and are so welcoming to visitors. We often hear the communities being regarded as some of the nicest and most polite groups of people our trekkers have ever met!

2) You get to experience all four seasons on one challenge

Peruvian climate is well known for being very diverse, it has 90 different microclimates, including 30 of the 32 world climates, which means you’re in for some varied weather on your trek!

You should be prepared for anything as you will trek through cold spells, low cloud, humidity and beautiful sunshine, so layers are a must.

Seeing the spectacular scenery in all conditions makes for some breathtaking views and incredible photo opportunities.

3) ALL THE LLAMAS!

Spotting Peru’s most famous residents, the llamas and alpacas, is such a highlight of this trek. There are more than 7 million llamas and alpacas in South America and each of the llamas who reside in Machu Picchu have their own name tag. You’ll find them roaming around the ancient ruins, ready to pose for a picture. No trip to Peru is complete without meeting these sacred animals!

5) Make friends for life

Whether you join one of our trips in a group or come along as a solo traveller, you will be sure to make plenty of friends as you make your way to Machu Picchu.

If you are joining an open public challenge, your group will be made up of up to 30 like-minded travellers of all ages and from all walks of life and those on our university trips will be joined by a group of fellow adventurous students, all with the same goal to experience the extraordinary and raise funds for a worthy cause.

Your team will be there to support you, encourage you and make memories to last a lifetime.

6) Raise funds for charity

It’s an amazing feeling to know that you are not only taking on an unforgettable adventure and discovering a new destination, but you are also helping to raise much-needed funds for a worthy cause.

This trek is no mean feat and is not a holiday, it’s a tough hike and you will be challenged both mentally and physically, but you will be rewarded with a once-in-a-lifetime experience AND have the satisfaction of knowing you’ve raised a lot of money for a cause close to your heart.
