Everest Base Camp vs Kilimanjaro: Which Trekking Challenge Will You Choose?

If you’re into challenging yourself and enjoy a good trek, the chances are that there will be two iconic destinations on your to-do list. Mount Kilimanjaro and the Everest Base Camp… Always assuming that you’re not planning to climb Everest itself. But how do you choose which challenge is best for you? Here are a few things you should consider before deciding on your next big adventure.

Mount Kilimanjaro vs the Everest Base Camp Trek: What Factors Do You Need to Consider

Altitude

Altitude sickness is a serious consideration for anyone thinking about a mountain trekking challenge. And if you have experience of walking, and living at altitude, you’ll understand why this is something you need to think about before deciding between Mount Kilimanjaro and the Everest Base Camp. Both destinations take you to high altitudes. Everest’s South Base Camp in Nepal sits at 5,364m above sea level. While the summit of Kilimanjaro is 5,895 metres above sea level. Which would imply that Kilimanjaro is the tougher challenge. However, when undertaking the Everest Base Camp trek, you will be at altitude for longer. This can put a real strain on your body, making it much harder to enjoy the experience.

Distance

It’s a 130km return trek to Nepal’s Everest Base Camp, which typically takes 12-13 days to walk. The Kilimanjaro ascent is approximately 62km, taking 6 days. The difference between the two challenges is obvious.

Difficulty

We would classify both Kilimanjaro and Everest Base Camp treks as intermediate. Neither involve dedicated climbing equipment, but both do require stamina. If you’re considering either challenge, then it’s a good idea to work on your endurance and cardio fitness.

Risks

All mountain treks carry their own risks. From altitude issues to twisted ankles and avalanches. Taking the routes that we use, sticking to the main pathways, and travelling at the right time of year, you are as safe as you can be when trekking. The main difference in terms of safety between the two destinations is that the Everest Base Camp is more prone avalanches. But avalanches do occur on Kilimanjaro too, so it’s important to be aware of the risk. However, your guide will be kept informed of any adverse weather conditions or signs that the area may be unsafe, and will direct the trek accordingly.

Trek times

We operate our Everest Base Camp treks in March and November. These are the times when the weather is at its most stable and the temperature can be cold but not intolerable. The windows for trekking up Kilimanjaro are slightly larger, and we recommend travelling between January and March, or June and October. This will help you to avoid the worst of the rainy season.

Accommodation, food, and other essentials

Choose a Challenge treks are inclusive of accommodation and food. This means that you don’t need to worry about carrying half your worldly possessions on your back while completing either trek. And all diets can be catered for. All you really need to worry about is bringing the right clothing and footwear.

Trekking to Kilimanjaro and the Everest Base Camp are both once-in-a-lifetime experiences. If you do either, you will never forget it and never regret it. But you do need to understand what you are committing to when you embark upon your journey.
