And Now for Something Completely Different: The Budapest Marathon

More often than not, the challenges we present to you revolve around climbing stuff. For the brave of heart, we’ve got the biggies, with the Everest Base Camp trek topping the lot. For those with less time to give, we’ve plenty of treks closer to home – the Snowdon Coast to Coast challenge is one of our favourites.  But there’s more to Choose a Challenge than altitude. And if running is your bag, then the Budapest Marathon could be the challenge for you.

What Do You Need to Know About the Budapest Marathon Challenge?

What is the Budapest Marathon?

Described as a two-day running festival, this year the Budapest Marathon takes place on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th of October. While the full 30km marathon, which takes you past all of the most magnificent parts of the city, will be held on the Sunday, the Saturday has more of a relaxed vibe. With family-friendly runs, and events covering a range of distances – from 400m to a 42km relay race.

What is the route of the Budapest Marathon?

The best description of the route of the marathon is ‘undulating’. The course navigates a loop which starts and ends at the Lágymányosi Campus of the Eötvös Lóránd University (ELTE). This is situated to the south of the city centre, on the right bank of the river Danube. You will follow a two-lap course, which initially travels north, past the Statue of Liberty, and on to the Chain Bridge for your first crossing of the river. As you continue along the course, you’ll also see the iconic Fisherman's Bastion and Heroe’s Square.

What will the weather conditions be like for the marathon?

October has been selected as the month of the marathon because it has the most perfect conditions. While no one can promise that there won’t be any rain, the typical temperature range in early October is 8°C – 16°C. With around 80% cloud.

How long does the Budapest Marathon take?

How long is a piece of string? The time it takes to complete the marathon is entirely down to you. But the time limit for the 42km and 30km run is 5 hours and 30 minutes. Timing is automatically measured by bib tag. Twelve refreshment stands will be positioned throughout the route. And there’s a photo service provided, so you can capture those memories as you go.

Why would I want to consider the Budapest Marathon challenge?

If you enjoy running and you like to travel, the Budapest Marathon is a no-brainer. The run is essentially a strenuous sightseeing tour, with added exercise kudos. And Budapest is one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, so the route never gets dull. Our challenge package includes four days away, so you have that little bit of downtime to acclimatise and explore – and Budapest has a lot to offer. Whether it’s the Szechenyi Baths, Buda Castle, the Great Market, or Margaret Island.

The Budapest Marathon is now in its 37th year. And it is loved as much for its location as it is for the marathon experience. If you are new to marathon running, this is one of the most accessible events, providing an easy route in a comfortable environment. And for those moments when your thighs start to burn, the incomparable scenery provides the distraction you need to carry you through.
